(a) — Reflections

Notes from the inside of the work.

Fragments from my coach training notebooks and the sessions since — kept honest, kept unfinished.

On presence · Reflection 01

“Drop the need to understand. Your role is to be with the client — you won’t create a question, you will arrive at one.”

Early on I treated every silence as a gap to fill. Now I treat it as the room doing its work. When a client goes quiet, I can stay quiet too — most of what matters arrives just after the pause I would once have interrupted.

On seeing · Reflection 02

“The ability to see the PERSON and not just the TOPIC.”

Leaders arrive with a topic because a topic is respectable. Underneath it is usually a question about identity — who am I becoming, and is that alright? Working deeper matters more to me than moving forward quickly.

On structure · Reflection 03

“A roller coaster or a local train? Lack of direction creates unease. Structure with a human touch is what I am after.”

Unstructured conversation can feel like free fall. I hold a light structure — where are we, what is the outcome, what would you measure — so that the freedom inside it feels safe rather than frightening.

On ethics · Reflection 04

“Imagine Lego bricks. The coach doesn’t tell anyone what you are building, doesn’t tell you what to build — just asks questions and helps you choose the pieces.”

That is how I would explain confidentiality to a child, and it is honestly how I hold it with adults too. Coaching is not consulting, not therapy, not advice dressed up as a question.

On systems · Reflection 05

“You cannot change what you cannot see. So we create a new observer.”

In team work, one person shifting changes the shape of the whole. My job is often not to solve the pattern but to make it visible enough that the team can no longer un-see it.

On myself · Reflection 06

“I am driven by helping my clients see themselves differently — like a prism that creates a rainbow out of light.”

Freedom, learning and ambition are my own values, and they show up in how I coach: I would rather widen your field of options than narrow it to my favourite answer.

If something here landed, let’s talk about it.
